The reason I ask is a few hours of fishing a jig takes some punishment. You know getting hung up, beat against trees, trash fish, etc.
I normally get 1-2 trips from a jig before it shows its battle scares.
I guess the type of water or the type of fishing you do has its effects.
I use them until I loose it most of the time.

I can’t say that I have a definite lifespan, all things considered. There are days when the tail is almost gone and they still hit it with abandon. Next trip they won’t touch it, go figure. I fish lots of grabby stuff so they take quite a beating. I knock the paint off of factory jigs in record time. Trolling they last a very long time. I guess snags claim most of my losses with not retying enough being second.
All I can tell you is what people have told me over the years and I have had several tell me they caught over 300 crappie on one jig. I am sure these were hackle tails as I also use a lot of marabou on 1/32 Oz Roadrunners and usually I loose one before I wear them out, but my neighbor and I fishing one really good week a few years back and he caught about 125 on one jig before he retired it. They were still hitting it, but the tail was really short by then. That's about as good as I can do as far as how long converted into how many?

I have two jigs that I have re-assigned to special duty only status. One, a new age with marabou and the other a new age chenille with hackle. The marabou is a bit shy of 125 and the hackle just north of 150. I decided to see just what they will do and now only use them in a pond that has very limited cover, but lots of fishies. We'll see where it goes. The powder paint is flaking a bit on both, but I don't bake. Figure most will be sacrificed to the snag gods anyway.
Since I use mostly jig heads & plastics ... the jig heads last until they get snagged beyond recovery. The plastics can last for several trips, or they may fall after a few dozen fish (or less). My jig heads last for many, many trips primarily because they're weedless jig heads (casting) ... the jig heads I use for various "trolling" methods, not so much, because they are not weedless jig heads.
The main "hair/feather" dressed style of "jig" that I use is a Road Runner (mainly casting) and I don't lose them often, and even if the hair/feathers is chewed off I can still use them with plastics.
If i'm fishing tailrace waters behind the dam .... 30 to 40 cast ! Missouri rocks like to eat jigs
In my opinion it depends on who tied them.
I guess that's where I was headed with this. I don't bake the heads either. Just think it's too much more to do knowing what's going to happen to it once it's used. A jigs life doesn't last long down here. I guess it's the cheapest bait I have every used.

We're from similar fishing.
I've fished the same jig for three months, caught many fish and wldve still been catching fish on same jig. But the circumstances changes and now my colors will change. I don't troll and I'll disrupt a brush pile/tree top to get it back quick. It's prob not smartest thing to do, but I don't re tie often. And we always eat. Not a trophy fisherman.
