New from Alabama
Hi all, I've been reading here for a while, and decided to join. I have a question about structure though. Has anyone ever used the 4 foot wood dowel rods you can buy at the hardware store? I know, save money where you can, buy I had quite a few pieces lying around, and was wandering about putting it in a concrete block, with it in one cell and pvc in the other.
Thanks in advance, and good fishing to all.

Welcome to the site.
I sank my first condos last weekend. I used both PVC and some scrap wood i had around the house. From what I have been studying from the guys on here is that just about anything goes for artificial structure so long as it is not toxic. I am looking forward to not getting hung up on the PVC though.

They'll work. Main reason people use pvc is because it will never rot.

I always grab broken broom handles at work and save old shovel handles and stuff. I even pick up an occasional beaver stick along the bank to stick in a bucket full of cement.
I get the oak runners off the busted up skids at work and put several in each short bucket of concrete. I use a lot of concrete for 2 or 3 runners ( some are 4x4) to make sure that they sink.
I've caught some really nice sized fish off of these beds with the 4x4's.
