Tiller Steer Conversion
Has anyone on here ever converted their motor from a steering wheel to tiller steer? I have an 18 foot jon boat I use for shallow crappie and duck hunting and it would really make the boat more practical if i had tiller controls. I am just not sure what all it will take and how easy parts will be to find. It is a 1988 Evinrude 50 hp.

I converted an early 80's 35 Johnnyrude. It is an undertaking, but doable. I had to basically tear the thing down til there was nothing but the clamp and below left on the boat. Luckily I didn't have to buy any parts as I already had a tiller steer motor, just swapped to one that wasn't. A lot of good info on iboats forum.

Being that it’s a older model motor, your best bet would be to find a compatible model that is tiller and salvaged and swap components. New parts will most likely be difficult to locate and most probably more expensive then just buying an older replacement motor of your liking.

Thanks for the input. I think you are right my best bet would be to find a compatible motor that is already tiller that i can use parts off of, part of me wants to just sell the boat and get exactly what i want but unfortunately i don't think that will be an option.
