Good day at Poverty Point, Delhi, La.
For our last day of fishing in Louisiana, Jeff and I decided to hit Poverty Point again with plans of keeping up to ten of those big white bass if the crappie didn't want to bite. After a stop at The Honey Hole bait shop in West Monroe to buy shiners, we again headed east on I-20. We were launched by 7:30 and motored across the lake to the deep water canals. The wind was blowing good and steady so after trying to use the trolling motor to work the shoreline with shiners under bobbers with little luck, we anchored where we could cast up to shallow water. Jeff stuck the first fish, a nice 2 1/2 pound white bass, and added another a few minutes later. I was next with a couple of cookie cutters, and within an hour or so we had our ten in the box. Number 10 came slowly because I was convinced that we could do better.
We worked the same 200 year stretch of shoreline all day and caught a lot of fish, white bass, yellow bass, goo and cats, but the crappie were playing hard to get. We were going through our shiners like no tomorrow and I told Jeff that when we found the crappie, we would probably be low on bait. That's pretty much what happened.
We tied off to a cypress tree in deeper water and after catching more trash fish, I connected on a decent black crappie. We moved tree to tree and finally found the one that was holding crappie. We took 9 white crappie from that spot before we ran out of shiners. We also caught a bunch of trash and missed maybe 10 decent bites. Biggest fish was 1lb6oz with most of the others around a pound+.
This was the perfect topper to a great trip. We didn't catch a ton of crappie but our usual lake, D'arbonne, is flooded and muddy so we were fishing a lot of new water. We learned a lot and caught a lot of off species fish, saw some pretty country, got to spend time with my son and his friends, eat crawfish till we were ready to burst and soak in some southern sunshine ( and southern rain ). We learned that the white bass are darn good eating and have big fillets. They also are easy to catch and fight like tigers. All in all, a fantastic vacation.
We're now packed and ready to head back to Michigan. Look for us coming through Charlotte in about 15 hours. Having trouble with pics so Jeff is adding them.
