Whitney spawn
Went out on the first kayak trip of the year, went way up steele creek thinking i would be in slab heaven but only found myself catching black bass while my buddy caught the only good slab of the day.
Usually this creek is stacked and im kinda glad we didnt see many fish, hopefully i havent missed the spawn. Water temp was 62-63 fishing stained water thats clearing up from the rains.
i cant say what the water temp was before the rain. Im goin to guess 52-58 on a warm still day. But we had two days of 60 degree rain. Which i think played a major factor.
I wonder if they are either spawning or moving in to spawn.
Hows the fishing on your end?

I will venture to guess they are still moving and some are already started spawn. Not all crappie move and spawn at the exact same time. The spawn lasts until all females have laid their eggs which can take a couple of months starting sometime before today. I have found on most lakes I fish that crappie can be found deep still but during March the bite is best in the shallows of the lake or if the lake has rivers emptied into them the crappie move to those rivers and spawn and then return to main lake when done. If I were you I would talk to people at boat launches and get some good info from the locals there. Or pick the brain of anyone bank fishing as well. Anyone fishing may have information that will help you find and locate them on Whitney. Good luck!

Well while i was getting my burger at the local bait shop/gas station. The owners have secret brushpiles they fish and usually have a good idea, one man said hes only been catching 3-4 a week since texas last big ice storm. Before that he said it was on fire in the deeper brush. Makes me think they are either actively spawning or moving into spawn. Either way is fine as long as i dont miss the big fish time of the year where every one plus their cats and dogs can catch them haha.

The fish are still up the river or were before it started to run hard after all the rain ...they will be in soon I bet , I doubt them fish already got busy in that deep of a lake coupled with the winter run up the brazos , just 10 days or so ago my buds were just laying waste to limits of big slabs way up on flat rock ....soon bro soon

i gotta say your one of my favorite crappie.com members, i wish you had a youtube channel lol

Ketchn: i understand that lol time is precious.
well when i drove into town the road was lined with people walking to the river. Im gonna guess that rain really helped them move up, gonna try to go tomorrow and see if its gotten any better.
