Bat Jig Question ???

First off love the site , been lurking for a while before I registered as a member . One of the reasons I pulled the trigger on joining this site was I have recently started tying my own jigs . Have always liked Marabou over plastic but as with so many others have struggled with finding common patterns in marabou that every plastic company produces millions of Soooooo as with most everything I get into I started off with basic tying equipment and found that #1 tying crappie jigs is pretty easy and worst addicting AND a fella finds out he has LOTS more friends that he thought when they find out he is making what THEY have been looking for also ! :santa

Anyway to the point ... as I stated I started off basic but that didn't last long as I have been in constant upgrade mode almost from the start , Have bought a supply of heads ( 1/8 3/16 and 1/4 ) with sickle hooks and have been happy with the resulting ties but ran across the "Bat"jig heads and Doit molds and was intrigued with the wacky hook configuration ( short shaft and wide bit ) . Not overly impressed with the eye location but that my be a home brew modification for down the road . Have alway thought that I had better hookups with the short shaft hooks but that just maybe me...

While pecking around on this site I ran across couple guys that have poured the Bat Jigs with sickle hooks which I'm sure will work but to me takes away from the original design advantages of the Bat jig so I guess my question is there anyone who had try both hooks ( original #6 wacky & Sickle ) on this head in a honest side by side comparison ?

That's a question for Jackie53, he is the guru on the bat jig. He has some good info on them and has modded his molds in different ways. If by chance he dosnt respond pretty quick might PM him. Also think DrNip has worked some with that mold. You might try going into the search function and search for posts on bat jig and see what you find.

Can someone show me a bat jig? I have a couple made from steel and wonder if we’re talking about the same thing.

yes have tried both hooks the hooks designed for the mold are to costly.Like the sickle hooks espically the gold hooks "most fisherman don't think the gold hooks are cheap.Not anymore.we fish deep clear water high mountain overfished lakes any tree or brush sticking out of the water is hit or fished by 20 boats.we sink our own brush for crappie we lose a lot of the standard crappie jigs.This is were the bat jig shines we have two molds one with an added wire guard "do-it" wire guards will fit no or a small mod."install wire guard while mold is hot"The gold sickle hooks can be bent slightly to fit without breaking.A lot cheaper!! and the do-it hooks are too stiff!!my twocents. went from losing 10-15 jigheads and spooking the fish in the brush pile to fishing a bat jig losing no jigheads not spooking fish and catching limits of crappie.The best brushpile jighead ever designed my 2 cents.We also tye our own jigs cannot beat them most don't like the little collar but to me gives a holding point for starting the thread.Would not do without our bat jig molds.Wish they poured more than one cavity at a time! Why we have two molds can pour two at a time.My two pennies.Hope this helps.Have molded thousands!!all your friends and family will be wanting some!Go ahead and order a thousand hooks.We use the Lil nasty gold sickle hooks in them really like the 1/32 and the 1/24 oz jigheads number 6 and 4 hooks.Best brushpile jighead ever designed.Our 2 pennies!!The eye or line tie goes through the brush without getting hungup!!in brush.and get a better hook set while casting or our secret shooting dock's.!!!

very good info. going to have to try the sickle hooks mod. I had found the regular hooks you are supposed to use in the mold is way to stiff.

Thanks for the feedback .... when y'all say the #6 wacky hooks are to stiff do you mean to stiff to straighten out if you get hung up ?

Hey Jackie I have never used one of these Bat Jig heads and don't understand what makes them different on hanging up so can you help me out a little with that?
