Great forum. Been reading it for years,
Maybe a dumb question..But,,I have been Sac fishing for nearly 5 decades.. Would love to find the best way to fish shiners in thick cover,I have 1 downed tree in my lake with at least 500 gold hooks hung up in it,,any tips from the experts?:banghead
BTW--I fished all the NE lakes around Monroe growing up for "White Perch". Moved to Prairieville in the early 80s...
Quit killing shiners and tie on a jig;) or buy your shiners hooks buy the gross.
use a slip cork and just poke your hook off the cover.

Caught some slabs in both of the Horseshoe lakes near Bastrop and Mer Rouge(miss the Ice Cream at Mer Rouge).
These are what I use. Hook the shiner from the bottom and out the top of his nose. Works great. Trim the brush guard a little shorter.

I use weedless jigheads, custom made by Grousefly (site member). But, if you want a "regular" (Aberdeen) Crappie hook to be weedless, they might be hard to find. There are many companies that make weedless "hooks" ... but finding them in a size smaller than 1/0 might be a problem.
I have never tried this, but it came to my mind while pondering on your predicament. If you can find the right light wire; one that is light enough for a crappie to push out of the way, yet stiff enough so you could wrap it around a hook shank. I would wrap the wire around the hook shank up close to the eye with a set of pliers so that it is tight against the shank. It may need to be wrapped 4-5 times. Then I would run the wire through the eye of the hook and bend it so that it is positioned down close to the barb of the hook. You might even want to make another wrap around the shank after running the wire through the eye just to help hold everything together. Make sure it is long enough to reach the barb because you can always cut off any extra.
I don't know if that will work. LOL. The exact size and stiffness for the wire would have to be found. But, if I needed a weedless Aberdeen wire hook for crappie, that is what I would try to make. If ya'll get that puppy perfected and patented, remember where you got the idea. LOL.

I’m far from an expert, but I fish jigs 95% of the time. I fish the tight line method using 15lb invisibraid spriderwire. I switched to this line because I mainly fish buttonwoods and cypress roots and get hung a lot. Believe it or not, I can feel the light bite with the invisibraid, but if I get hung, I can pull on it and usually bend the hook enough to break loose and save my jig. Point is... switch to jigs. Lol
I shiner fish with the gold aberdeen hooks.....never rigged a weedless for shiners....but try this.....take a small rubber band and loop it thru the hook eye.....then stretch it down and hook it to the barb....if this is not clear, I can draw a picture....
