Saturday evening therapy session
I had a big day planned for today. I put a slab of ribs in the smoker and was looking forward to the Spartans whooping the fat weasels. Also planned on getting in a nap or two.
Due to the cold weather, I couldn't get the smoker up to temp so the ribs turned out good but not great. I had to do them in the oven. The Spartans stunk up the gym and I turned off the TV with time left on the clock and a loss a certainty. To top it off, I didn't get a nap.
After the game ended I decided I needed a therapy session so I loaded the shanty and ice gear into the truck and headed north to Holland Lake. I was on the lake in my spot by 4:00 and the first hole I drilled was loaded with fish. They met my red spike tipped smelt stick 6' off the bottom and I got a hit right away, a keeper sized bluegill. A few more throw backs were landed before they moved on.
I drilled two more holes 20' either side of the first hole and both had fish in them. It only took about 20 minutes and I had 8 keepers on the ice, just the right number for a fish dinner
I've been wanting to crappie fish this lake so I drilled two more holes and deployed the Fish Trap. After firing up the heater I grabbed a rod rigged with a #12 treble hook and a thill slip bobber, baited it with a shiner minnow and dropped it down 14' in 21 fow. The 2nd rod was rigged with a 1/32 jig head and tube skirt tipped with a minnow. It didn't take long for a decent crappie to come in to my jig then move to my slip bobber set up and hit my minnow. It wasn't long and a carbon copy crappie hit my slip bobber rig and I was figuring it was going to be a busy night. Wrong. Those were the only two crappie bites I had and at 6:30 I packed up and headed back to the truck with 8 decent gills and 2 nice crappie, plenty for a meal.
Sanity restored
