There is major difference in marabou.True marabou comes from the marabou stork. Most marabou is from turkey. I personally like blood marabou. Each feather is suited for flys such as wooly bugger tails and long enough for most streamer patterns or jigs. Basically you use the whole feather except for the main stem. This means very little waist. Also using feathers such as turkey flats requires the tyer to make several cuts and bunch the material in group for use. This requires more time and a little more work to get it all lined up. Then comes the problem with dyed colors. Alot of cheap feathers do not hold there color. Black is one of the toughest colors to keep set. Many times when in the water it washes out and can turn some what purple or gray in shade. Once you find a good supplier continue to buy from them and hope the quality remains.
Crazyangler has some of the best Marabou.Fly shops will be the best but more expansive.

I do not think you can tell if feathers you buy is good or bad without seeing them. First question is what are you tying? When I find a good product I buy a large quantity. I tie commercially so it is important that the final product is all the same. I buy marabou a pound at a time. However if I get it from a supplier online they understand it better be of the quality I want or it will get sent back. Buying a small amount of marabou is not taking too much of a chance. However if you were buying dry fly necks I would suggest to only buy after inspection.
To be honest I’m just starting out. Have no ideal what the jigs names are. I’ve just seen some on here I like and trying to see if I can make them. Kinda of a winter hobby. There was a pretty big difference in price from one place to another and they described the product the same. I’m not looking to do it for anyone else other than me and a couple people I fish with. He pours jig heads so I thought I’d give it a try. So any help would be appreciated

The difference in price could be do to the amount you will receive. If starting out I would jut get the less expensive material. It is important to learn basic skills needed to tie. First would be what thread do you want to use? Then tie it secure to the hook. Last is to whip finish. Yes half hitches can work but once you learn the hand whip finish you will not need to rely on head cement to hold the know tight. I still use it to make the finish look shinny but really not needed. Last would be to tie in the materials after you learn the basics. If learning to ski it is important to learn to stop before starting and the same is true in fly and jig tying. One bit of advice is to lightly dampen your marabou before putting it on the hook. This will make it tighter and not a fuzzy mess. However some of the dyes are not suitable to be consumed so I would suggest to dampen a paper towel or rag and wet ( dampen) your fingers. I know of a few other tyers that got sick years ago from the dye in marabou.
Most stuff I will buy on-line. When it comes to feathers and buck tails. I want to see what I'm buying, so I go to fly shops and even Bass pro. You pay more but you know what your getting.
Thanks I watched a couple videos on the whip finish and did ok with I made 4 jigs yesterday just trying what I saw in the video then I tried to pull them apart they held up pretty good. But when I got the stuff to make jigs I didn’t get any kind of tail material lol I got some body and thought the flash was the tail material. So I was going to order some marabou and ? Just to try and see.
