My fish finder died on me last week and I am looking to replace it. What would you recommend as a fish finder? Looking to keep it under $500 . I had a humming bird unit before. I fish mostly freshwater.

What features are you looking for? Side imaging, down imaging, Chirp & Mega imaging, etc.
Also what kind of fishing, spider rigging, single pole jigging or?
If you have a tough time deciding, give Brian at BG Marine (Member Sponsor) a call and
he can definitely guide you thru the process. He did for me and gave me a great price!

I have a lowrance elite 5 ti with the Totalscan transducer and I really like it so far. I was iffy about the touch screen, but I don't think I'll ever own another fishfinder that isn't touch screen.
Like everyone always says though, wish I would have a got a bigger screen.
Save your money.....Just take speckdetector or crappieday with you everytime you go.....
There is a sale on the hook 7 by Lowrance right now, there around $299, has downscan and chirp. 7" screen with color. Unit is integrated gps and depth finder. Included is my personal favorite the track back feature which allows you to scroll the cursor back on the depthfinder over the structure and it marks the gps location so you can go back right to the debris or fish you passed. I have the hook 4 and may buy the 7 for the larger screen.
THIS 100%
Would like side scan, but not required.
I hace the elite 4 hdi, which is the hook predecessor, all the same features basically.

Shoot, if I caught half the fish you do on Monroe I'd be as happy as a Mule eating briars:biggrin....spent more time this year on Monroe than can ever remember due to the hurricane situation & she's starting to grow on me, yep invest enough time & the blind hog will find an acorn now & than. Sorry to take this thread off track Slim Jim, take a look at them dragonfly units by Raymarine, they have a very crisp vivid imaging for the price range.
Hey slimjim, I have a elite 5 and love it except wish it had a bigger screen (dang old eyes) if I didn't have a fish finder/gps I could get by with just a cheep gps. Speed control is where it's at, find the speed and depth they want. A fish finder is fun to look at but you can just hit a waypoint and troll back to where you hit em.
I have Lowrance HDI on console and Dragon Fly Pro 7 in front on trolling motor. I've liked my dragon fly so much better than the Lowrance I just ordered another one from the GPS store to put beside the lowrance. They've dropped the prices now. It's less than 500 for 429. For crappie fishing, it does the job without the price.
