Wildest crappie fishing bycatch

Can anyone beat a TARPON?!?!?! Had it confirmed by two local fishing guides and a faculty member at UNCW department of marine biology. May have to zoom in on pic to see the telltale streamer protruding from it's dorsal fin, but it's a legit Tarpon, 100% confirmed. Caught on a shiner 5 miles north of Wilmington while crappie fishing in a creek off of the NE Cape Fear. No crappie to report. Water still pretty warm down Wilmington way, maybe one more cold front will turn em on. Tight lines friends!

I am not surprised... but somewhat perplexed. I have heard many times about salt water fish migrating into fresh water rivers and streams... including the bull shark and several others.
What you need next is one those 150lbr's to bend your pole while you're sunfishin'. That would make for an awesome fishing report there.

I have a fairly good idea where FriedFish was at. I know for a fact that a bottle nose porpoise, was spotted about another mile or so north. These fish are along ways from the actual ocean. I'd say a good 25 miles.

You know exactly where I was Jack! The crappie aren't back there quite yet, but any day now. Haven't been on the site for a while cos haven't been doing much fishing. The company I worked for for 8 years went under and I fell on hard times, having to sell my canoe and boat. But I'm back on my feet and getting back to my passion... destroying crappie!

I caught a crappie on one cast & flounder on the next up on Currituck Sound in the 70's before it turned so salty, but never a tarpon. Very cool catch. I guarantee you did a double take. Good luck next time you go.
