Fishing lay downs

Ive fished them before with a cane pole just dipping a minnow in and around them.id like to hear some of you guys technique on casting jigs on them.

I use a BnM Ultralite or Sam Heaton 12' pole with very small braid. I'll use a weedless jig head sometimes tipped with a minnow. Even though it's weedless, I still get hung sometimes. I don't cast with this setup - just mark the structure real good and throw out a buoy marker for a reference point then vertical jig.

I fish the out side first then start working in to it. I think good sunglasses are a must for laydowns so you can see the branchs and not get hung as often. I try to pitch between the branch's and let it fall.

Similar to what Lowe said. I've caught more fish pitching jigs around structure than i have fishing in the thick of it. There's a time and place to fish in the thick of it with a long jig pole and nothing beats feeling a crappie hit a jig when you are fishing that way.

As for jigging technique with a long pole, i'd suggest using a high vis braid with a barrel swivel and about 1-2 feet of fluorocarbon coming off and tying your jig to it.

I catch more in the tree myself but it will be different for every day and tree. I also use a small float in the spring and vertical jig with the float it's hard to explain how I would have to show you.

Trying not to repeat all the good advice above. Start outside and work in. I begin with cast and retrieve. Sometimes starting in the channel casting toward the bank sometimes letting the jig sink with the water column. Also consider changing your angle of approach (direction)...sometimes presentation from a different direction is what they want. When working near or in the laydown, I will pitch to particular locations first. In the laydown, just fish vertical. For all presentations, ensure to minimize slack in the line to feel the thump. Sometimes there is a very subtle bite. This is where hi-vis line is key. The bite may be so subtle all you see is your line slowly moving...yes, even against current. Again, hi-vis line. And, I agree with polarized glasses. Most importantly...Have Fun!

Damion: Some will argue the merits or efficacy, but try a loop knot with your jigs. It is my personal preference. The fish may not care, but I think the jig/bait presents better.

I can tell spaceman works them trees like i do and I agree. He pointed out some thinks I forgot to mention. Also the loop is very important and the knot I use 90% of the time.
