Right before that big one breaks it off
My timetable for line on reels that see heavy use :
Mono - once a year
Braid - once every 5 years (or just unspool it and reverse it back onto your reel for another 5yrs use)
Or whenever I lose a quarter of the spool (mono).
More often for mono if kept in boat locker or vehicle, or laid out in boat or in use & you fish quite often. (Heat or Sunlight will deteriorate mono)
I change out my crappie reels 2 to 3 times a year. I have used vicious 6 lb. mr crappie 6 lb and suffix 6 lb and all are hi vis. After a couple months use they get where I can break them with my hands and I pull off around 10 to 20 ft and retie.
So you don't empty your spool, just some of it and retie?Quote:

My longlining reels usually just change themselves out from snagging and breaking off. I don't really get rotten line since all my equipment stays out of direct sunlight in an enclosed building (I call it my boat barn). In a season (6-8 months of crappie fishing) I'll pretty much use up a large spool of line (thinking @ 2000 yards of line) respooling reels when they get pretty low on line from breaking off. I'll do a lot of this in the boat while fishing too.
