Crappie fishing with Ricky Watts 7/31/2017
Ricky and I launched from a different ramp this morning and checked out some other places. I caught a 12" crappie on my first off shore structure cast and then we didn't get another bite. We searched around this area for almost an hour and then moved to one place where we have been catching some quality fish. We didn't catch many there (6), but I did luck out and catch two TARP crappie on 2 out of 3 casts. I caught a 14.0" Black Crappie on a Cicada Minnow Mind'R and 2nd cast, hung it up on a stump and broke it off. I tied on a Black Night 2" Baby Shad and on the first cast with it, I landed a 14.75" Crappie that looks almost as if it is a hybrid. It looks like a Black crappie with some faint vertical bars like the White crappie have. Who knows?
We ended up our day fishing the Wolftever creek channel in the Harrison Bay area and caught 5 or 6 more smaller crappie. Fish are bigger in the river. The water temp was 84.1 this morning and TVA running 20,300 CFS and wind slightly out of the NW and it wasn't a problem except it gave the fish lock jaw for the most part. Grin. We caught a 9" Bluegill and another 9" Shellcracker. I had a big bass jump off after hitting the Black Night crappie jig. It looked 3-4 lbs. Ricky had a keeper bass jump at the boat as he was lifting it in and it broke his line and fell back into the water.
We looked in some shallow water that has had grass in the past and there is no evidence that there is any grass in the areas that we looked. The air boats have done a good job of killing off the grass. I just hope that it doesn't kill off the fishing. I'm going with Candi in the morning and I hope that she catches a big crappie. I may just watch her and not fish until she catches one. (Not) Grin.
