I decided against buying the 999 and have just decided to save up until I can buy either of these units. Which one would you guys recommend and why. I'm really only going to be perch fishing and using the side imagine to find structure.

Other than having side imaging a bigger screen size is the most important thing for old eyes is my opinion. I would op for the Humminbird 10 SI gen 1 as it would be more user friendly. I would think the Mega has a lots of bell and whistles you would need to learn also.:dono:twocents
I agree with scrat except I figured I could learn something in my old age so opted for the Helix 10, mega Chirp SI Gen2 and absolutely glad I did. I can almost tell the sex of the crappie and I need every advantage I can get at my age. I also understand you may not want to spend that much money but I let my two kids know I was spending their inheritance. They were good with that.

I have the 9 Gen 2 Mega, smaller screen from the 10 but better imaging

MEGA has a dedicated DI piezo in the xducer ...
Gen 1 DI is computer generated from the SI data ...
If DI is important to your fishing style - dedicated DI is a great addition ...

:hesaid the dedicated DI is a great addition, that was one of the main reasons I got the Mega. After fishing with guys with good DI I seen where it could be useful, now I always run the split DI/SI screen when going over structure.
