40hp 2stoke mercury 1995 - dies at accelerating

It's been difficult to start and typically have to start in neutral full throttle but here lately it dies when accelerating from idle to full throttle, getting out of a hole. Here are some other key points.

- in neutral I can not get to die no matter how quickly I rev from idle to full throttle
- in gear from idle to slow acceleration no dying, only die with quick acceleration. My guess is somewhere around 20% of handle stroke, about 1 inch handle movement
- going down the river i can adjust from 50% throttle to full throttle very quickly and no negative impact. Back and forth throttle from full to 30/40% throttle position.

It's not so bad when on the river, really annoying when trying to load on trailer. Because your only using the lower half of throttle.

Oh other thing is when it dies, then starting is a pain.

I have replace the fuel line & bulb.

Any other checks before I drop it off for the 2-3week waiting line at marine repair shop. I don't know if it's flooding or starving fuel, or what I can do next. Any advice?

Sounds like a low speed jet trying to plug up. If you have a filter on it check that first. But I would get a can of seafoam from WM and put 1/2 can to 6 gallons of gas and run it on muffs for 20 min, let sit overnight then do it again and let it sit. Then take to lake and run the stew out of it for awhile. That should clean it up.

Sounds logical, I will try the sea foam and report back

I started the seafoam process. Removed the plugs to take a look. I don't have much experience with plugs, but these looks no good. Even so not sure if this plug condition could contribute to in Gear performance issue but in neutral no hesitations... anyways I will change the plugs and continue seafoam cleansing....https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...53a9de646a.png

Very well could. Had 1 bad on my 4 stroke Yamaha that act up if you went off idle rill quick especially loading on trailer. When idling or running down the lake you would never know it was a problem.

You need new plugs. Advance Auto or Auto Zone carries the exact same plug a whole lot cheaper than a marina.

Definately need new plugs!! Also, if it was me, I would check the condition of your fuel lines on your carb. I am not sure of the year or condition of your engine but our fuel these days is breaking down these fuel lines faster than some places can replace it. Engines sucking air can have a negative impact. Fuel lines are cheap and it is worth the effort to go ahead and change them.
