Chickamauga Lake Crappie report 6/12/2017
I had the pleasure of fishing with a new friend this morning. Jason drove down here from Oak Ridge to get a crappie fix and we were able to supply him with one. Grin. We started early and quit early after I got a phone call from Mrs Drumking wanting to know if we were finished. She wanted to go shopping. Grin.
We got Jason a limit of 11-15 inch crappie this morning. All were taken on Bobby Garland Green Thunder and Emerald Shad 2" baby shads fished on 1/16 and 3/32 oz jig heads. We had several other 10+" keepers that we threw back to grow up a little bit. We tried to release the big 15" TARP Black Crappie, but she didn't make it. She came back to the surface almost immediately and we couldn't revive her. She did weigh 1.5 lbs. She came from deep water brush.
We fished vertical structure, bluffs, and docks. Strangely, we didn't get a bite on docks today. Maybe because of the cloud cover. Dock shooting is better when the bright sun drives the fish back into the shade. Jason, in addition to more than holding his own on the crappie catching, added a nice trashy green fish and a Warmouth bass. I caught a little spot that had line sticking out of his gullet and upon closer inspection, it had a big 4/0 or 5/0 shaky head jig hook hanging out the anus. I did a hemorrhoidectomy on the spot, got the hook out with no more trouble and I'll bet that little spot said his prayers upon release. The plastic worm that was on the hook was dissolved and only a small portion around the screw eye that holds the worm in place remained of that worm.
Water temp was 77 to 79 depending upon location and the flow rate was 15,200 CFS this morning. The bluff bite is off now with so little current. Deep brush and vertical structure still holding fish. Thank you for driving down and fishing with me today, Jason. I hope that all the techniques that I showed you will help you on your home lake.
