I have a Lowrance elite 5 chirp. I am new to the whole electronic things. I am wanting to get into crappie fishing, we do some catfishing. Not really interested in bass fishing, except for trolling for white bass. My question is do i need to go into my settings on my finder and change anything? Or any tips that i need to know when looking for brush piles or fish on the finder? Thanks in advance.

The basics with 2d is knowing there are 2 separate size Sonar cones ...
The 200kHz Sonar cone is 20° and will have more detail with less coverage ...
The 83kHz Sonar cone is 60° and will have have more coverage with less detail ...
So choose the frequency by what you are trying to do at the time ...
If you're searching for new "stuff" you will want as much coverage as possible = 83kHz 60° cone ...
If you're sitting on top of structure fishing you will want as much detail as possible = 200kHz 20° cone ...
In either choice - raise the Sensitivity (may be called Contrast in Hook) until there is too much clutter on the screen for your liking - and then back off 1 or 2 clicks ...
Remember... An absolutely clear water column being displayed means the unit is "filtering" out a lot of weaker echoes you may want to see ... Some clutter showing is acceptable ...
