From what I am heating my advice is "patience grasshopper" but all subject to change any day
Made our 1st trip of the year yesterday. The bait guy is still selling bait but currently does not have any shad. He said it has been very hard to find shad in the lake this year.He has his tanks set up at the old tire store close to the ramp. All he had was jumbo bass minnows. We put in around 6:15. Fishing was real good at the ramp in the rapids for about the 1st 45 min. We anchored up and managed a few on top water and fluke minnows. We finally headed down river and started drifting the bass minnows. We ended up the day with 30 or 35. one that was 23", one just under 22", and another just over 18". All of the other fish were 15-16". We drifted along with another boat who had caught shad at Gaston early that morning. They were catching 3 times as many fish and the majority of those were keepers. I think the type of bait makes a huge difference. I will not go back without shad.

That's a good report in my book Buzz. It woulda been better if you would have had shad or herring. I think the later it gets when there's lot and lots of fish there, they've eaten up most of the baitfish, then it doesn't matter quite as much. 35 Rockfish in a day , I'd take that. That's 31 more than my last striper trip.. How was the crowd? Thanks for the report.
I heard that you are not allowed to purchase Herring for cut bait thus year. What are they selling at the Roanoke Sportsman in Williamston this season?
I fished yesterday and Tuesday. Drifted shad for about 3 hours on Tuesday. Caught 2 fish. Went back yesterday and decided to try something different. We anchored up and threw jigs for about 2 hours then found a break in the current close to the bank. We tied up literally on the bank in the trees. Dropped a shad down about 10' and it was on for about 2 hours. We ended up with 25 or so. Only one over 22".
