I have a two year old trolling motor battery that seems to take a charge (shows 100% charged on charger) and according to my volt meter has a 12.9 volt charge. A few weeks later it was dead and had not been used so I recharged it and checked to see if there was amperage draw and found only .002 amps being drawn so I left it thinking it was ok. Today , about two weeks later, I rechecked it and it only had 6 volts. Can a battery discharge on its own?

If the battery is hooked to a lot of things and even the trolling motor you may be getting a parasitic battery drain. Sometimes circuits are still on when you think they are not. I know a lot of people unplug there trolling motors when they get through fishing not only because of battery drain but if someone stepped on the foot pedal it would sure tare up a prop or hurt someone. You may also have a bad cell and another thing have you checked the water level in the battery lately. You may want to let someone do a load charge and check for bad cell Autozone and Advance Auto will do this check for free a lot of times.
doesn't sound good but charge it again and unhook one side of the battery.If it's down again it's all over. When ever I am going to leave one sit for an extended period I always unhook one side. Especially in freezing weather...you leave a map light on or something and it runs down when it's below freezing and it's all over.
A battery will hold a full or nearly full charge for months given no draw against it. But they can develop a condition internally that will drain them,limit their capacity ...etc....etc...
Charged it to a little over 12V and let sit 24 hrs. Still has 12V so maybe the battery is still good. Guess I'll take it out Monday and see how it holds up under use. Thanks for the repliesQuote:
