How do you tie your feathers?

First off, whenever you cut a feather, you start off by cutting the tip which has the smooth round shape and then the rest are v-shape cuts. It seems like everyone is using 1 or 2 v's with the round tip on top and then tie those together to get that pretty full looking tail for their jigs. I tried just putting 2 v's without the tip and my jig doesn't look full. Every feather has only 1 round shape tip. So do I use 1 feather for every jig or is there a way to make the v's look full? Thanks

1st image is how my jig looks without the feather tip , which is the first part of feather that gets cut. I hate that space in my jig. 2nd image is how it looks when I add the feather tip. It gives it that pretty full look. But every feather only comes with 1 tip so what do I do with the leftover v's since tying them by theirselves won't make jig look full?

I would like to know about this too.

Mr. Thump, your 2nd picture looks really good. Save the v's, they can be used for smaller tails. If you tie them down closer to the v notch, it will close the gap and they make great tails for bluegill size jigs.

I am the one that posted the pics about how to cut the feathers. This is my version of tying a tail as many guys use two tips or they use to. More and more guys are choosing to use the way I tie them and why I posted it in the first place. I place a tip down on my leg, then I stack 3 V's on top, I pinch them together and make sure they ends are even and then I tie them all in together.

Here is a little video I did a few years back where I tie the jig in just over 1 minute, you will see I pick up all the tail at one time and tie it in. There are also slide shows in the same sticky at the top of this board!

Drdore those are not my pictures. I got them as an example from off the internet because they were perfect for what I was trying to explain. Lol, I'm a long ways from that type of perfection. Thanks Skip , your website made me ask the question because my jigs look nothing like yours no matter how I tied them. I've also look at all your videos and I see how you cut them but I never saw anyone use just the v's only to tie a jig.

The only time I just use the V's is on the Gray Ghost, but even on that one I use a tip a good bit. I did make some Chart/Blue/Chart like that for a few guys that ask of that. If you just tie V's for a tail you need 4 or maybe even 5 of them and most of the time a #6 Sickle hook is better since it's shorter. Normally I tie in a tip and 3 V's on top of the Tip. It does take time and practice to make them come out like you want them.

The smaller the profile, the less sparse you want to tie anything. When I say "profile" that means the smaller the hook shank, the smaller everything is.
Not the jig head weight.
I've gotten to where I won't fish without a #2 or #1 hook.... been liking a 1/0 lately.
If it's spAwn time n I'm not using a cork, maybe #4 to downsize everything n pendulum pitch from a distance..... or use a longer 10-12' pole to do it vertical.... in which case you can do whatever profile you want.
Everything else works good for panfish.
Put a cork on anything or troll and everything changes
TO ME, the better fisherman you are, meaning the better you can control your boat against the elements, means the bigger baits you can use.....depending on how you are fishing.
