I am coming down March 23rd to fish Lake Cumberland for the first time ever, we will fishing out of Jamestown. Any information on the water and the fishing would be greatly appreciated. PM if you have a good starting point for me to target. What should I expect, how deep, what lures work the best for you locals down there?
I will also be there about that time. I will be fishing out of Wolf creed (gator 2). I havent been there since the water has been raised. Id like to hear some crappie reports also. Thanks JC
You will want to fish the upper end of any of the creeks.
Cumberland is a totally different lake now.it went from a lake with very little cover to one with a few thousand acres of flooded trees/bushes most of which will be completely submerged.
Go to Google Maps and zoom down on the areas that you intend to fish. Look at the backs of the creeks/areas and you will see where many of them have virtual forests growing back there. Then take into account that the area was satellite mapped back in 2008, when the lake was still drawn down somewhat for the dam repair.
Lake is currently at 707' (Winter Pool is 673' ... Summer Pool is 723')
You can use this site - Lake Cumberland Water Level - to get a feel for where the water levels are, just prior to your trip.
Even areas of the main lake that have dirt banks have a row of trees that grew along the waterline during the years that lake level was held at 680.
Some areas in the heads of the creeks have forests of 20ft tall sycamore less than a foot apart, 500 acre flats covered in willows.
Cumberland is a totally different critter now
