- Fish bait: minnows and chubs (Cyprinidae), salamanders (less than 6 inches), crayfish, and hellgrammites—50 in aggregate (all species combined) unless said person has purchased fish bait and has a receipt specifying the number of individuals purchased by species. Note: Madtoms, crayfish, and salamanders cannot be bought or sold.
This paragraph is really #4 from this site. https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishin...tions/nongame/
They had to do this because there were people catching hundreds of shad then just dumping left overs on the ground. Of course they were dead as they are hard to keep alive but its a major waste. Most people catch them with throw nets.
Thanks Bill! In Pa. it is similar. Either a 4 x 4 net or trap with 1 inch entrance holes. I almost never see fishermen collecting bait for fresh water fishing.???? I always enjoyed catching minnows with Dad as a kid and still do today. ( Fifty + years later) To me it is a great learning experience and some of the best most natural bait there is to use. I guess when I catch bait that means I will be going fishing in the near future! Also perhaps I am a little cheap? I do try to support the bait shops also!
