Hey everyone, new to the forum and a rookie at catching crappie. Plan to run down from NC to upper end of Marion this Saturday. Anyone have any tips about the crappie down there. Called the LF bait shop this morning. He said crappie were starting to turn on and were full of eggs. I kinda figured it was time for that. 3 hour drive tho and would love some recent experiences. Thanks!
Hate to hear you're driving 3 hrs to come fish upper swamp of lake Marion, you're passing at least 2 better lakes for crappie fishing this time of year, wylie and wateree, but Santee can be fun if you happen to hit the right day. that said you didn't say how you'd be fishing so it's a little difficult to say you can't really troll, or tight line @ lowfalls but you can one pole jig around cypress trees and stumps which are plentiful in that area, minnows will work also under cork, you may have to move around and fine the deeper water on the flats to locate the fish. But again this is santee you can do your part and the fish don't cooperate with you anyways. Unless you Ink. good luck and WELCOME TO THE BOARD.
Appreciate the reply! Wylie and Wateree are both about 2 hours or so from me. I wouldn't mind hitting either one if they are better. Last spring on Moultrie I got burned by the bass for two days. Rough time down there. Lots of fishing pressure as well. I know that place is up and down for sure. Was hoping it would be a little easier on Marion for crappie right now. I have a 1860 tunnel jet that I use for crappie and river bass fishing. I have 8 rod holders and normally use minnows. Prob under cork if I go to Marion. You think Wateree would be a better choice? I can troll or drift with minnows or one pole jig as well. I generally just fish the deeper channels and drops in Feb/march at greenwood. Assume that would be a good start on wateree?
You need to read Inkdabber's report on Santee last Fri and Sat. He fished Jacks Creek which is just as stumpy as Lowfall. He normally single pole jigs but this trip he tight lined minnows. I've watched him long line jigs there and Stump Hole.
PS His report is in the moderated forum. Also Mr Cromer was going to Broadwater today, so he me have a report from that area.
