First observations from first attempt at powder coating.

I had played with this in the past but decided to make a fluid bed setup. I started with 4 cups purchased from Simplycrappie. Then tried to make my own as well. I mounted 4 cups on a 1 x 4 and started trying different techniques. I used paper sack for my own cups. Didn't work, will try again. As I started using the cups from Jamie, I found some would work but some not. After reading different post I found my big problem was that the powder packs as it sits. Shaking didn't really work but stirring as the air pump was working worked great. My heat source was an alcohol lamp and the amount it heat varied with size of head as well as the color of powder coat. Regardless of the size there was a sweet spot that would allow me to dip and still keep the eye clear except for pink. Didn't what I did I had to clear the eye at least half the time. Too much heat and the eye would fill up. Not enough and the coating would not stick or it would cool as an orange peel finish. Overall an enjoyable session on the workbench.

I go to more than most in the painting portion of that. I use wood tooth picks that I cut even smaller on the point and when I dip a head in the powder paint I stick the tooth pick for that color through the eye cleaning it out. Then usually I don't have to do anything to it when I tie. I tried the home made fluid beds and didn't like how they worked compared to a bought one with the membrane in the cups and all! I also all some clear powder into most colors of powder paint as it lets them fluff much easier if you do that. Ask other questions if need be!

Believe me we all had learning pains with powder painting, it does get easier. Like Skip said if you have problems ask away.

I'm going to try replacing the paper sack material with pharmacy filter paper and see how that does. I understand what Skip says about just purchasing ready made cups but at this time it's just the challenge of making my own.

Try a coffee filter. I use them in mine and have had good luck. I basically made mine from PVC 1 1/2 inch pipe using a 3 inch pipe on connector placing the filter between them. I have also found that certain paints are thicker than others. When I have a color not cooperating i'll thin it with some clear powder and it seems to help.
