Hybrids, Crapie, Screenshot 12-28-16
I finished out my fishing year yesterday if the weather people are correct for the up coming days. I have been very fortunate to have been able to be on the water so many times this year. Probably 15 trips since October. Yesterday, I fished one of the small lakes in the Triad area that is stocked with Hybrids. I dusted off the lead core rods and trolled for about 2 hours. I used to do a lot of this type of fishing. My lead core line is 17 years old. Not sure if this stuff deteriorates. Had three hookups and landed two fish. The two fish landed came on two of Pete's umbrella rigs. They work very good. Kept one fish.
Around noon brought out the crappie rods and longline trolled. I had seen a few fish on or near the bottom as I fished for the Hybrids. Went to these areas and fished 25 ft deep in 28 ft to 34 ft of water. Bite was on immediately. Caught 62 crappie and 5 white perch in 3 1/2 hours trolling. All were small. Some 9 inch fish and a couple of 10 inch.
Decided to try and take some screen shots today. Love Jordanlimits shots. Three weeks ago, I could see schools of crappie near the bottom but stacked up. I could watch them go off the screen and count to three and the jigs would have reached the school and rods would go off. Now with the lowering temps the crappie on these shallow lakes are already flat on the bottom and I no longer can see any schools. I did take one screen shot of a large school of shad with what I believe to be crappie on the bottom to the right of the shad. Not sure, but did have 2 rods to go off right on cue as the jigs reached that area.
I hope the new year will be as productive as 2016 has been to me. Take care while out on the water.
Rick
