Newbie looking for advice

Hello all and Merry Christmas.
I am currently putting together my need list to get started in this obviously addictive hobby and can't wait to get started. I hope to be up and running by the end of January so that I can be well stocked for the coming spring.
I've been told the vise is one of the most important investments a tier to make but the choices are astronomical. Funds are of course an issue sof trying to get this going within a strict budget. My question is for a beginner (and I'm positive I will continue this hobby for a long time ) what is the best vise for the money. I've looked at prices and I'm hoping to be able to stay under $50 on this one item but the cheaper I can get it, the more of the other supplies I can get. What say you sage ones?

You can do with a inexpensive vise to get started. Eventually you will want to upgrade but not a nessisity to start. My advice is go somewhere you can put your hands on some. See what they are like and how they feel. They need to have some kind of rotary function so you can turn it over and see how your material and thread are laying. There are some out there that will get you started in the 20-30 dollar or less range.

Ive been tying on a vise kit from cabelas that comes with all the tools and have no reason to upgrade im over a year in and tie somewhere around 1 jig every 2 minutes or so on a stationary vise. It'll be slow at first and then youll get the hang of it no need to spend a bunch of money on a vise especially if your like me and it's just a hobby I make a few for other people and give some away on the banks of the lake to the old timers.

I'm definitely not looking to spend a lot of money. I've got a buddy who did it for years and still all his molds and furnace which he's giving to me so that saves me a bunch of money. What really sucks is now that I've decided to get into this hobby I want to get started but gotta wait.

started with a kt from BPS. Have used it for a few years till this year bought a good vise. There is a thread here that broke down all the vises for the price range. I read it several times. My choices came down to the Peak, or Griffin (sorry Skip). I really like the Griffin a lot, and I think that is all that matters. I am no expert as some of the others are on here. But I and my buddy that I taught, have tied some up and caught fish on them. You bet its addictive specially when you catch fish on your own tied.

Yes I've read that thread myself several times but was trying to get a more personal sense of the different vises. I've had items in the past that I liked the cheap versions better then the more expensive ones so I'd assume with vises it could be the same. It all boils down to personal preference. The nearest place to go physically check them out is 2 hours away at BPS so trying to get everyone's opinion. I appreciate all your thoughts and yes I've been looking at the BP kits as well.

I see your profile says you are from MO. What part of MO. are you in? I'm @60 miles east of Springfield in Mountain Grove. I carry a couple of the Terra Super !! Vises in my fly tying section of my sporting goods store. I also have available that you could at least try out, a Terra rotating spring vise that I keep for my monthly fly tying classes.

If you are close you are welcome to stop by and try them out to see if they would be suitable for your needs. I can order any of the Terra Vises you may be interested in.

I personally have a Montana Mongoose vise that I tie on, but for starting out I would recommend any of the Terra Vises.

Don't forget about Renzetti vises too! I tie on a Nor-vise, but Alan have a Renzetti Salt Water Traveler, but it cost more than a Peak which I am a dealer, but the Renzetti is very good quality and gives more room around the jaw for fingers and just more room. It's a light weight alloy vise and probably what I would use if f and didn't have the Nor-Vise! I love my Nor though and the ability to spin it saves time and makes some things easier, but it's about $300! I don't sell Nor or Renzetti so have nothing to gain, but these two are my personal favorites!

i suggest you go to a good Fly shop, maybe even Bass Pro and feel and see the difference in some. I don't think they probably sell the Nor and really don't know what brands they sell, but at least acan see and feel the difference in a quality vise and a cheaper one! If their is a Fly shop anywhere close to you, go!
