Line weight?

What test line can you use for tightlining shiners? As I understand, sacaulait are real finicky when it comes to heavy line. I've been using 6# but would like to go heavier to reduce break offs when snagged. How heavy is too heavy?

I started Crappie fishing back in the 1950's and when mono became available we used 8# test. And it probably had the diameter of today's 10-12# test :Doh:

I don't do much "tightlining" live bait, but I used 4# test Stren & Trilene lines for decades, and now use 6# test Vicious Panfish copoly line (casting/jigging), but I also use weedless jigheads.

If you're using litewire hooks, you should be able to straighten them out with quality line of 6# or 8# test line.

Now, I'm not much of a believer in Crappie being "line shy" ... and I've used hi-vis lines for most of the past 30+ years, and still catch my fair share of fish. Might make a difference in extremely clear water, but even on lakes with slightly stained water (with visibility of 3-4ft deep) I've had no problem catching fish.

I use P-line CXX hivis 8# myself. Have been very impressed. You just have to wet line when tying knot.

I use a 10/2 braid. Power Pro slick.

I use 14 lb, I would rather straighten my hooks than break off every time. I don't the fish cared what lb it was.

I use 10 lb high vis yellow mono for everything

8# Stren Hi Vis Gold casting, tightline, slip cork........

I use both 6lb and 8lb Mr. Crappie hi-vis chartreuse line.

I use Mr Crappie 6 lb Hi Vis for crappie, and Mr Crappie 8 lb Hi Vis and Stren clear blue 12 lb test for cats, walleye, bass, etc. Cheap and works for me.
