Why? Theres no top on the lower unit. Water in the hub will not burst it. Liquid must be in a closed container to burst it open. I keep 25-30 boats on my lot year round and I've never drained them nor have I ever had one burst.
If you have a seal leaking and water is already inside the lower gear case, that's different depending on how much water has separated from the lower unit oil.
Just have always been told to lower your unit in freezing Temps because you run the risk of ice damage. However I will defer to the big dog of boats, good to know !

I've always been told the same thing. Better safe than Sorry. Mine ain't been in the water since August so I'm safe LOL
Put a mark on the inside of a bucket. Fill the bucket up to the line but make sure you can see the line. When the water in the bucket freezes it will swell up and cover the line but it won't burst the bucket. If you fill the bucket and put a lid on it, it will blow the lid off or burst the bucket because it's now sealed. [emoji4]
I come here for the free fishing reports and get a science lesson instead:)
When I take my out of the water when it is cold I make sure I trim it all the way down and let the water run out of it. I don't know if it is needed but would hate to freeze it up.
A few week ago when I loaded the boat to head home from the lake I flipped the switch to drain the live well and headed home. When I got home and went to get the fish out of the livewell it still had water in it. I thought that strange so I walked around the back of the boat to see what was going on and found that the drain had frozen it looked like a big ice cube.
