Electric Smoker Failed
I went to use my 30 inch Masterbuilt electric smoker this afternoon and it tripped every socket I tried. Reset sockets and tested with electric drill...worked fine. Tried smoker again and they tripped again. Smoker has never been wet. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Smoker was new in December, 2010.

I had a heating element (in another brand) snap into one night. You could not see the break unless you really looked, but it would trip the breaker. Unfortunately it snapped one night while I was smoking a turkey and the turkey was bad by the next morning. That is why I roll with a gas smoker now. Good luck, Mr. George, with fixing yours or getting you and new one. Maybe you could get the Mrs. a new one for Christmas.

I will just go ahead and get a new one...found 'em on sale for $140. If I can fix the old one I'll just have a spare.
Thanks for the replies.

Make sure your heating element isn't touching something.read a bunch of reviews on some models. Said something about a metal tab support for element letting the element touch and burning out the element.

You might check for grease around where the element connects to power source
The element is located underneath the wood chip box

I disassembled the smoker this morning and found two possible culprits....grease buildup where heating element passes through smoker wall, and heavily rusted wood chip shroud making contact with heating element. After unpluging the element from the power wires I plugged in the smoker. It did not trip the power outlet and the electronic control seemed to work properly, proving to me the problem is related to the heating element. I think it may be back working soon!

Yep.....i think you got it ......power was going to ground. Your element may still be good....clean everything up and give it a try.

Nope, heating element is burned out. I'll order a new element, but I'm still going to get a new smoker. Thanks for the advice!
