Something A Little Different!
Went to the Hill for a mess of crappie so started right after daylight...around 7AM. Had a good mess for me and the wife by 9AM (caught 25, kept @ 10 good sized ones...a few 1/2 lbers with most going 3/4 to a lb and a few around 1.25#). Also caught some perch for bait so I switched up to catfishing. On my one and only setup I marked some big arches deep in a creek channel around 35' deep. Lines out and a rod that I dropped near the boat was the first hit. Fish took the rod down into the water so I was never able to remove the rod from the holder before the line was under the boat into the motor....breaking off in the prop.:( The next bite also put a good bent in the rod but the fish missed the hook (which is sorta rare when dealing with big hooks and large baits for big catfish IMO). Wasn't even able to get to the rod before that was over. Oh well! About 20 minutes later the rod nearest me took a good bend, about half way to the water. I got in position and reeled hard and fast setting the circle hook and then the fish buried the rod into the water and the fight was on. At one time I thought it coulda been a new PB as the fight was hard and strong in the 60* water. Even when I first seen the fish I still thought it might be my biggest yet. But as things were, the scales topped out just over 33 lbs. Still though, it was a lot of fun feeling the fish and getting 'er in the net. After a couple photos I released her to fight another day. Pulled anchors and trolled for a little while without any takers so decided to call it a day. Good memories AND a nice mess of crappie in the livewell to clean when I get home....cant get much better. Anyhow, was a good break from deer hunting for a day. Just wanted to share it with you fellas.:)
