Question For You Guys!

How many of you tie with marabou? I am just wondering if enough guys tie with it to get me to get some bulk colors of it. I am thinking it's not something a lot of you use, not sure why since it's the best stuff there is for action. However if tying it the best way it's not fast to tie at all, but I guess using that tiny stuff where you use the entire feather as a tail would be faster than even hackle, but the way I tie it, it's much slower which I am glad not all that many call waiting jigs with marabou except for my Roadrunners, lol!

Skip I have done a bit with marabou and really like it. As far as my catch rate well my buck tail seems to be the killer. But winter is coming on so it will be restock time.

I use marabou for 95% of my jigs. Most of the stuff I end up buying is too big for tying on #4 hooks, so about an inch or so of the feather ends up in the trash. I have yet to find a package that has the perfect size feathers. What size are the tiny feathers that you come by?

I agree, marabou takes a bit of time to tie. How do you tie yours? How long does it take you?

Skip I use it a lot but I buy the pin marabou and most of it you can tie the hole feather. Some of it I have to take apart like you do. I buy mine for barlows if you buy 10 or more it is discounted. Let me know what kind of price you looking at and I might be interested. And you right more people should be using it. I would say 40% of my fish come off marabou jigs.

I pull it off of the stem and tie it in to the length that I want. Works great on rivers and streams for trout and small mouth bass. I used to tie almost all of my jigs with marabou, but I fish a lot more plastics now, 95%.


One thing you can do with solid color jigs, you can tie on the tail, kind of short, and then use the rest of the marabou like dubbing winding it up the hook to form the body. I've done that a lot with trout sized jigs as well, and they work well on pan fish too.

I do not tie commercially, but have not tried marabou for my own jigs. Maybe I should.

I mostly buy Blood Quills and I tear off the barbules and stack them until I have enough for the tail. Then I pinch it about where I want to cut the pulled ends off to the size I want them tie in. It just takes me longer to tie marabou than Hackle. I have bought bulk before, but just in colors I use a lot. Plus when they had to change the die they use it came out less green and I loved that color so I bought a bunch of it. Then they were going more green so I got them to make me some more of that less green color as a custome order. So I had a lot of more green and a huge amount of my Chartreuse that I liked so I sold off a lot of both back when I first got it.

Since I sell some Hackle it just kind of hit me to ask if anyone wanted marabou and if enough had interest I would think about at least having a few colors.

I have not decided anything yet.

i have started to think a little about trying the little stuff, but I just have issues with using many with the stem in. I do use a few tips with stem in, but only if very thin, so probably 10% have that and the rest have no stem. I do end up with a ton of tips that I save for what ever else. I do plan o. Coming up with something to use just tips, lol!

I can't stand it personally... I don't catch fish on it either... I have tried numerous times around here and can't get crappie to sniff at a marabou jig... It's probably been over a year since I've tied any using it... I prefer kiptail around here... However I will say that I move to itty bitty bobby garlands some at the end of spring time which might be where the marabou would come into play...

Being where you are, I don't know really anything about fishing North of here, lol! However here from the first moment they come in for spring fishing I use marabou 100% of the time and maybe in late May or early June I will pull put a hackle tail jig to fish deeper over brush. While spring is here though, really no reason to use anything else as far as I am concerned. I will say that first year I tried some kip tail, it was in 2010 in March and cooler weather was just moving on, but water still a bit cool. I just went down to my bank just to get one wet and try even though I was not even sure there was a crappie at that spot. Still popped it in under a cork and really was shocked at what I caught in the next 15 minutes, but even with that proof I couldn't stop my long line trolling with my 1/32 Oz Roadrunners with marabou tails. Since that time I have converted several locals over to the Roadrunners, but still a good many here just use one of my very basic Hackle tail 1/16 Oz jigs every single year the same guys call. I have given up even trying to get them to move over to maybe some Crystal chenille for the body, but now these guys still are using Blue Copenhagen Rayon. Most use my Chart/Blue/Chart, but one alone sticks with Silver/Blue/White and he refuses to even try anything else.

I believe a lot of it has to do with what we have confidence in and thankfully since 2010 I actually have confidence in Marabou, Hackle and even kip tail. I use 2010 because of the kip tails and actually have had confidence in Marabou since the 1970's and that has not changed, just added Hackle along the way and probably fist it was because of Zell Rowland using hackle on the treble hooks on his Pop-R's. Reading what different it made over the type of materials they were using on them and how the feather had action so it kind of breathed like even when sitting still in the water. The water movement alone makes it look alive like, something a fish wants.

Anyway all that matters is we all have something that works when we go fishing, lol! Now that is what it's all about!

make a couple of videos and post them. I for one would be interested in learning
how you tie, since I am a newbie to this art! Thanx for all your help in the past.
