Calcasieu river sunperch

Got on the river yesterday for the afternoon and had a good time. 15 or so sunperch (that is what they call them down here). Did not catch any goggle eye or bream. Caught them on Gulp alive crickets and red wrigglers under a float. The are small, but fun. It is hard to catch big fish on the Calcasieu, I am sure there are some, but they are hard to find. They may be deeper in the river, but there are so many tops and trees that it is very hard to fish deep. Any ideas would be welcomed.

Etex ... have you considered using weedless jigheads ?? They would allow you to probe down in/around that deeper cover, with "less" possibility of hanging up.

I get 1/16 & 1/32oz weedless jigheads custom made by a Crappie.com member (Grousefly) ... with #4 & #2 Aberdeen hooks, but he may be able to make you some with smaller hooks (or even smaller heads ??)

I said "less" possibility of hanging up, because one can "hang up" a weedless jig ... it's just "less likely" than when using a open hook jig. :biggrin

How about drop shotting live bait with light wire Aberdeen hooks or use jigs with light wire hooks...

I have drop shot gulp crickets and worms, but still have a problem hanging (I rarely use live bait). I will try the Aberdeen hooks and my thought on drop shotting again is to pay close attention and stop the rig as soon as I feel the weight hit the snags. That can be hard sometime due to current in the river, but I am serious about learning this river fishing. Thanks for the reply.

I make these for dropshotting. They pinch your line and slide off when hung so you can get your rig back. Holler if you want to try some.
