hi y'all, first post!!!
i am trying to get set up for higher tech crappie fishing. i will be single pole mostly. from my experience boat control when fishing brush and structure is critical. now for the questions- would i be better off with si or di for on the lake use to locate structure and is a gps trolling motor really useful when fishing this way i.e. ( worth the cost).

:welcomeWelcome to Crappie.com. You came to the right place to find out any and everything about crappie fishing. They are a lot of people that know way more than me but I will give you what I know. The SI sonar is a very valuable tool for finding everything in shallow water and the GPS will let you pinpoint what you find and go back to it. The DI sonars are also very useful for seeing the structure and fish and with SI you normally get all three sonar views The bigger the screen on the sonar the better especially if your eyes are old and not so good like mine. A good sonar is well worth the cost in my opinion.
Welcome to the site. "scrat" is right about a good sonar with gps. Lot depends on your budget.
I have Humminbird HD Di mounted on my trolling motor. I single pole and push minnows...I have found it quite useless for either of these styles of fishing, because with Di you get a razor thin image from straight below the transducer(trolling motor). What you see on the screen is all ready past where you are fishing. Humminbird has a very good 2d sonar on the Di, called Switchfire, which will let me see just past the tips of my rods in 14-20fow.

The only plus on the GPS trolling motor for single poling would be anchor lock. For single poling I would suggest sticking with cable steer foot control or tiller control.
