I've been tying saltwater Clousers and the bucktail just does not last on speedy toothy critters...Anyone know of a thin synthetic hair that still has good action but might be better against teeth?
Have some crimped nylon but it's too thick for good action.

Try synthetic Yak fur. A lot like bucktail.
slam - There's not a lot you can do with the toothy fish they will tear it up!!

Never used that stuff before. For sure never seem anything a blue fish couldn't mess up. Caught small ones that could bite 30 lb. Mono. in half.Quote:

I'm going to be honest with you. Spanish mackerel have very sharp teeth . There's no much that will hold up to them.

I don't throw a lot of natural hair ties when smacks, blues or ladyfish are around. You can step down from crimped nylon to Super Hair all the way to Congo Hair and get better durability. Congo Hair has the best action and is the easiest to shape but compresses more when wet than bucktail.
Super Hair gets my vote for the clouser or deceiver. I have not tried their Unique Hair but that could be an option.

I would get some steve farrar flash blend and try some of that, it is a little stiff like bucktail and I have read where quite a few saltwater fly anglers use it for their lead eyed flies. there is a color called redfish, which is a rusty color that they say is hot for the top color n a fly. It isn't cheap at about 4.50 a hank.
Thanks guys! Didn't know we had this many saltwater guys on here. I'm going to make a few surf candy epoxy body style flies to try. Lose the action, but can take more than a few hits!
