I got the latest Cabelas sale flyer today and they have a HB 788ci sonar/gps combo on clearance for 239.88 regular 579.88. Does anyone have any info or feedback on this unit? Sounds like a good price but I would appreciate any opinions, positive or negative. Says it includes Navionics +. Is this an adequit mapping system or just entry level? Thanks in advance.
It's a good unit, but the 5" screen is small. If it will be your primary unit, the gps screen will be hard to see from a distance. I used one on the TM for several yrs and served my purpose well. I did not use the map function, the basic map is almost worthless, you will need a map chip for it to be of any use, but most HB units have the base map, almost forcing you to buy the chips to have any detail of the lake at all.

If it is cheaper than Brian has it listed for, then it is a good deal. Most of the time however, Brian's normal prices are cheaper than the box store prices and his shipping is always cheaper as it is flat rate.
As for the unit, I'm a Lowrance guy so I could not comment on the unit being god or bad.
Rich, I'm also a Lowrance guy and have two newer units on my boat but neither have GPS, I've been using an old handheld which works fine. A mountain of Cabelas points got me dreaming of bigger and better things but I think I'll hold off for a larger screen. When the time comes to upgrade I'll contact Brian and see what he has. Lots of other stuff at Cabelas to spend my points on.
I think that's a good plan! I have two 798's and I wish I had larger screens.
Bigger is better! I have a tv screen and two others. I tried hummingbirds at the store. Couldn't figure them out. Same thing was said from the bird guys with lowrance.
I will say this, the HDS touch is tons easier. I have my dad using one. The HDS has a much better map feature set than the hook series. Maps are. Better than the Navionics chip. Kevin and I tested one and the standard Lowrance maps where more accurate and had way more detail. How big of a unit you want? I might be upgrading this next tournament year.
