confused on materials
Got a old vice from a friend to try and tie my own jigs/flies,but when I go to look at materials it may as well be written in chinese. I understand I need a decent bobbin, scissors, and whip finisher, but the types and quantities of materials really throws me for a loop. What size and type of thread? How much marabou should I get and how long will a pack or piece last me? What other materials might I need to start tying? Only thing i'm good on is ive got plenty of jig heads to use. Very basic/beginner questions I know but man it sure is confusing! Thanks.

At the top of the page are some stickys and you should read this one, It's an excellent starting point
http://www.crappie.com/crappie/jig-t...m/49489-tying/
I learned how to tie bucktail jigs back in the 70's for my Uncle and his friends. I agree whole heartedly about going through the FAOL tying lessons - when I first got into fly fishing I printed them all off. There are some really good tying techniques that apply not only to fly tying but also to jigs PROPORTIONS!!!
Trust me on this - we all had UGLIES when we first started tying!!!! It's all part of the learning curve that you have to go through. Don't sweat it you'll get better with practice. And we're here if you get stuck on something. The search function works well and will help you out also.

Welcome to the board!
Yes it's kind of over whelming when you first start, but it's a lot easier now than it use to be. There were not any videos on YouTube or anything like that when I started so I went to FAOL and learned a lot from their lessons. The language is hard to lear as there are so many different kind for so many different places and types of tying. Just relax and read the stuff like in our sticky post at the top like Fatman said.
Also to just tie regular jigs the feathers mostly will be either marabou or neck hackle, not other kind of hackle. Remember all feathers are hackle as are some synthetic materials too, just thing of the old term "he got his hackle up" like the car on the bak of a dogs neck when things are about to go South, lol!
Then what you can't find in the sticky post, just ask.
