I'm thinking of going down to Truman on Tuesday to try my luck and get my boat on some water that isn't Smithville lake. The questions I have are 1) Is there a pass for veh/boat that is required? I will be putting in at buck saw most likely.
2) Is it best to follow the main channel when navigating the lake to avoid stumps?
3) Any recommendations on where to go for some summer slabs?

You got the right idea bypassing Smithville and going to Truman, been thinking of doing that myself. Good luck
1) some of the ramps require a day pass $5 or a yearly pass which I think is $40 per year. Bucksaw is a free ramp as the Marina is there, due to this it pays to patronize their business with buying gas and bait etc.
2) stay in the main channel when above a slow idle and still be careful. If possible talk to someone going your way and ask if they know the lake and follow them.
3) my recommendation is below Bucksaw on a main lake flats on exposed timber. Look at the other threads below this one.
Be sure to clean, drain and dry your boat before going. So far, we don't have zebra mussels in Truman and we'd love to keep it that way. Be sure to clean the livewells and bilge area too. Hot water does the trick. Make sure it's 140 degrees.
Truman is a tough lake to navigate for your first time. Like Tommy said, try to follow some one and hopefully your fish locator will leave a GPS track to follow.
