minnow mixup

Went into the citgo at 8 and 47 intersection the other day as we have for several years and ask for a pound of minnows split in two buckets. We were charged for two half pounds instead of a pound. Ask the clerk and they just could not understand why I was questioning the transaction. Not trying to jump on this store or cost them business and the clerk said I could come back and talk to someone else about a refund. I'm just saying when you go in there make sure you and the clerk are on the same page. Even as poor as I am six bucks ain't going to break me but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. We were limited on time that day and had the captains grandson with us and I didn't want any drama on his first trip. If the captain had lit into them about it....well it just wouldn't have been pretty. Again not trying to bad mouth this store as the corkmasters have used them for years and have been well satisfied. Just make sure they know what your asking for.

Never bought minnows by the pound. How many crappie minnows are in a pound? I would think it save a problem by just buying a pound in one bucket and split them yourself. I think it would be worth it to save 6 bucks.

roughly 20 dozen in a lb, you gotta watch folks these days, in what country is two halfs not one whole???

fyi, most minner buckets don't hold a lb of minnows well, they die real quick packed in a tight space, but would support 10 dozen or a half lb well

I am the other half of the corkmasters. We have purchased minnows at this store on many occasions and had know problem with them putting a half pound in each bucket. This clerk was new to us, but she could have just not known what to do. Will give this store one more chance, but will be sure and clarify my intentions before purchase, By the way we always buy a pound at a time, as we use 2, 3 gallon bait buckets, that are equipped with continous air to them, and I have a large tank at home that we can keep minnows in for several days with know problem. 1 pound of minnows equates to between 20 to 24 dozen minnows and cost $18.00. Much cheaper this way and we always have plenty of minnows.

That is a big savings. I worked in a bait store for about 3 years. We only sold by the doz. Biggest killer of minnows is lack of oxygen. Bubble boxes at their very best only do a so-so job. In hot weather the air we pump into the water is hot and that heats the water. The warmer the water the less oxygen it holds. Ice in the water will keep it cool but most ice is made from city water that contains chlorine. Deadly! What I do is refill my drinking water or soda bottles with water and freeze it. Squeeze it a little to allow for expansion. I put one of these bottles (with lid still on) into the minnow water. It keeps them cool and don't poison the water. Extra bottles keep my drinks cold and I change out the minnow bottle after about 4 hrs. Just a tip if anyone would like to try it.

Wish I could buy them by the pound. Go some places and they count every single minnow and then some places just scoop them and call it good. I tend to go a lot after work so I'm really limited on time and it takes some time when they count out 8 or 9 dozen minnows. I think I'm going to build a bait tank for my garage to help save me some time but just have to find a source to buy them by the pound.
When we were growing up and trapped our own minnows out of a local creek to go catfishing we always put a few trays of ice cubes in the bucket and it would keep them alive throughout the night. Never used an aerator and the chlorine never really affected them. Guess our minnows weren't as sensitive as the minnows are today, lol.

My Dad had a 30gal plastic trash can buried in the edge of the woods where the sun never shinned on it. Any minnows left over would go into the trash can. It being in the ground kept the water cool. If he was just going for a little while he got minnows from the can. Never worried about them dieing.

thats a heck of a hole to dig, did he keep the can covered? have to make a custom longhandled minnow net for a 30 gallon can. i can keep 2lbs in a 48 quart cooler in the winter pretty easy but in the summer no go, i may get the boys to digging
