KY Lake Report 7/17

Tough day: We headed out from KDM around 06:30 yesterday morning to finish dialing in some changes we made to the boat while pulling cranks on the main lake. The morning actually kept us busy with a steady mix of yellows with the rare undersize white crappie and largemouth mixed in. We passed the Marshall and Lyon County search boats as they continued to look for the missing boater-a very tragic reminder of PFD use, especially at night. The recreational boating crowd and lake lice started making their presence known around 10:00 and a light SW breeze was starting to really stir up the main lake so we called it a day at 11:30 with 6 keepers. We had to work for those precious few. Marked lots and lots of bait balls but fish were not holding in the typical places I would expect them to be at this time of the year-I'll partly chalk that up to still learning my new home lake.

Good report. Yep, those lake boaters sure can stir up some waves. Lol.

I was out Monday afternoon. They say only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.I got on the water around 3 and the heat was almost unbearable.

I hit a few spots looking for some new bluegill/redear areas but just couldn't hang in with the heat. I ended up going out to some main lake drops and cuts I had never fished, hoping they would be holding some keepers. There were plenty of baitballs in everywhere from 8 to 30 feet of water and I had cranks running from 8-18 feet with zero results. The gaspergoos wanted to play as well as some good catfish but the crappie stayed buried up somewhere I was not.

I hung in till almost dark and ended up with 5 keepers, one 16 inch sauger, a green carp and a nice blue catfish. There was absolutely no pattern or ryme/reason to any of it. Maybe we will get a break in the oppressive heat after the Erie trip this weekend.

I hope we get a break in the heat soon to make the time on the water more bearable. I will also say that after this last month I will NEVER again own an aluminum boat that has a camo non-skid interior. There is no going barefoot in this boat after 10am without burning the soles of your feet off.

Been there, done that with some buddies' boats. That's why mine is solid white.

Hydro turf is the only way to roll.

We attempted to go out on the lake Saturday afternoon/evening. The wind was not bad at all, the wakes were what were tearing up the water. Once I got out to the main channel and away from the cigar boats and tubers it was fishable but I elected not to.

I marked bait balls and some fish on ledges and cuts north of Birmingham.
