What are the pro's and con's of SI vs DI?
SI works best for people fishing shallow water and for finding fish structure covering a larger area faster. DI works great for deeper water and for pin pointing structure and fish after finding them. SI DI and 2D is all good and gooder especially after they made the screens colored. :twocents
I would consider a DI unit ..... but only to supplement an SI unit .... SI as a search tool to locate structure is awesome and a must have in my book. Even if you think you know the water you fish pretty well, you will find a LOT more stuff you didn't know existed with SI .... Works good in deeper water also.
If you want to spend some more bucks, consider the Onix which has great SI and DI.
X3 ~ SI over DI 1st, the blended DI isn't too bad and DI just doesn't have the search coverage SI has....
IMHO -
Given the same depth of water and kHz setting:
SI is almost a 180deg span of sonar ping
DI is almost a 150deg span of sonar ping
SI is best at finding bottom cover and structure within the scope of the distance it is set for
DI is best at finding those things within a narrower range/distance
With that in mind, most people opt for using SI at the console when searching an area, then using DI at the bow for a closer look at target areas. They are better used in conjunction with each other, more so than alone.
Now, that's just my opinion ... and that's from someone that does not have a SI capable unit, only a DI bow mounted unit, and has little to no use for 2d sonar for fishing purposes. My 2d unit is console mounted and used solely for navigation purposes (by me) and depth of water notice to whomever is fishing from the back seat.
Thank you all for your response it def. helped... I wish I could buy both but can't at the moment!
