Chickamauga Lake report: 7/08/2016
I took Dr Phil and his Daughter, Sarah, crappie fishing this AM from daylight until 9:30. We found several schools of fish, and they were slow to bite, but we did manage to catch 9 keeper crappie for them and 2 spotted bass (released) and 2 yellow bass (also released) and a few crappie that were just short of the 10" mark. Sarah and her husband, Adam Urbano, are moving to Idaho and are leaving on the big bird this coming Sunday AM and Sarah wanted one last fishing trip. I was glad to take them.
We fished with Panfish Assassins most of the morning with Limetreuse and Blue Grass being the best colors. These lures were the 2" size and I really like these baits a lot. Almost as good as Bobby Garland plastics. They were fished on 1/16 oz jig heads painted chartreuse. The fish that we caught were deep. I caught keepers on a 21, 25 and 29 countdown method. Phil and Sarah also caught their fish deep, but I don't know how far down in the water column that they let their jigs fall. All of our fish were on off shore structure over stumps and brush. They appeared on the graph to be 15-30 feet deep mostly.
For those who may not know the countdown method that I use, I cast the lure well beyond the marker buoy where we have located the fish. I begin a 1000-1, 1000-2, 1000-3 countdown on a tight line as I like to let the lure pendulum down to the fish rather than leaving the bail open and letting it drop straight down. I try for a 1 second per count and I nearly always countdown every cast that I make regardless of the areas that I fish.
Good luck with the new job and home, Adam and Sarah. When you come back for a visit, be sure to call up the old Drumking and I'll take you fishing again. I really enjoyed your company today.
