Sunday Grand River smallies report*
Headed over to the state land again on Sunday morning. The river is down a bit form last week so a lot of the shallow runs I fished then are too shallow to fish now. There appears to have been a lot of human activity over the past week so any good spots close to the access didn't produce a hit. As I got farther upstream on the back side of Flounder Island ( aptly named because both me and my son have done the flounder there during past duck seasons, mine on a frosty 25 degree morning ), I started catching a few fish. Most were smallish but I did redeem myself and landed what I think was the big one that got away last week. It was in the 14"-16" range. With the fish not being in the same types of spots as last week I struggled to figure them out and on a whim ran a roadrunner through a large hole in the weeds and was rewarded with a nice 12" scrapper. Fishing these openings paid off fairly well for a while then I noticed some huge schools of carp and suckers cruising the weed edges and openings as well as along the bank. There were some bass and cats mixed in so I started tossing my lure into the schools and catching a bass on nearly every cast. After 4 hours the sun got a bit warm for my taste so I fished my way back downstream to the access. Along the way I ran into a couple of my nephews and a neice kayaking the river. I didn't keep count but figure I caught at least 30 bass with quite a few 12"+. I used a variety of lures, jig/ grud combo, Rapalas, Roadrunners, Mepps bucktail spinner and even broke out an old Super Duper . Everything caught fish but today the Roadrunner was king. Nice peaceful way to spend a day off.Attachment 243650Attachment 243651Attachment 243652Attachment 243653Attachment 243654
