Kayak Trip Report, Flint River (Hwy 431)

I made a short trip to the Flint River after work looking for an area to fish tomorrow. No Crappie, but many gills, bass and catfish. The river is still low with a slow current, perfect for fishing, but muddy with visibility of less than a foot. It should clear up in a few days, but I'm going to try a different area in the morning for Crappie. I'm not sure what the true name for these very colorful gills are, I was taught they're called pumpkinseeds but thought I'd share.

Best bait was a 1/32oz spinner with a 1" white twister tail.

yep we always called them pumpkinseeds, that is what they are in the books too . Scientifically they are:
Scientific name: Lepomis gibbosus .One of the best limb line baits for flat heads too. They are aggressive in home aquarium but rival any of the freshwater fish in color. Too bad they don't get big as blue gills
