Night Fishing

I normally wouldn't consider night fishing from a kayak, but my truck died and is beyond resurrection. So hauling my boat is not an option. There is a lake here, Arkansas, that has been drawn down and is not open to use for personal watercraft, water skiing and swimming. Due to the obstacles and hazards pleasure boaters are staying off the water. I was thinking of using a submersible led light and achoring. Have any of you folks tried it? Am I crazy for considering it?

I say go for it…but I would be sure to have a 360 light, just in case another boater is out there at night.

Let us know how it goes. I always wanted to try but wonder about sitting that long, still, and in one place.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have found the proper navigation lights to outfit my kayak. They run off AAA batteries. I have a Hook4 fish finder with a transducer mount already and the led submersible. Now all I have to do is find out how mad my wife will be if I fish at night by myself. I tried to get a couple other guys to go but they want no part of it on a lake, they both will fish the Ouchita River at night though. If I can make it happen I will fish Friday night and update this thread then.

I have night fished from my kayak. Here in SC we have to have a 360 light to be on the water at night and I wouldn't even think about being on a lake at night without one. Good fishing can be had at night and it sounds like you have a great lake to try out!

A few pics from one of the stalks and this night it rained the whole time on the water and a bad storm made it a short night.. Haven't been at night in a few years but it is getting time to go try it again. Hope you have good luck.

Just stay away if lake has Gators!!!!!

Thanks for the replies. Thanks for the success pics STUMP HUNTER. sharphook, we do have some gators around, the closest lake I fish has a few that made the news lately. The lake I am planning to try doesn't have any or rumors of any that I have heard. It is one of the best crappie fisheries here. I have to wait until Friday after work to finish rigging out the yak, so I may be a little late getting on the water. My wife isn't protesting too much, she is such a saint. So, at the moment the plan is to get on the water Friday night, fish a few hours, sleep a few hours in a tent and then fish a few hours Saturday morning. Unless the wheels come off this plan updates as I can.

I went last night. As soon as it got full dark the bugs descended! I stuck it out for about an hour. The Thermocell had no affect. They were so thick I bet I killed 100's just blinking my eyes. I was Still coughing them out this morning. No telling how many I breathed in. I would like to say this is an stretching the truth, but I have never seen the likes. Even all the bow fishing I have done at night has never compared to that.

When I go out after dark, I wear a wide brimmed hat with a net over it that ties around my neck below my collar. Long sleeved shirt and long legged britches are a must.
Keep all my stuff in a small bag in the kayak ready to go.
