Always heard this is a GREAT lake for eater sized catfish. Anyone care to share any info on how-to, where to fish, preferred baits, etc., etc.? Thinking about giving it a go before too long.

Butch I have fished it a few times. There are only 2 ramps and the wind (if any) kind of points you to which ramp. One of my buds from years past fishes it and he went with me for catfish a couple of years back.
We anchored in about 20 FOW just off a 35 ft drop and just fan cast redworms and night crawlers on the bottom.
If I was going today I would add some of the stink bait products to the mix. I bought a jar of "Sonny's Super Sticky Channel Cat Bait." Supposed to cut a piece off a swim noodle and dip it in this stuff and hold on. The cat fisherman at Santee swear by it, even some guides use it. I have not had a chance to try it yet.
The day I went with my friend we caught maybe 15 or so that ran from 2 to 7 pounds.
One other friend fishes Monticello exclusively for bass and cats. He trolls a Buck Perry Spoon plug and he catches some really large fish. He even went to a 3 day school in North Carolina on fishing this plug. I didn't know they still made it but he does really well with it.
Just have to mind the wind, it can get rough sometimes. Ronnie fishes it from his kayak so he will have more current info than me.
Good luck.
dang GBM we gonna hafta change you name to slimy slick if you don't lay off them slimers :Rofl :Rofl
Each time I have catfished there I drifted cut in half bream. Let the wind be your friend :)
From the 20' depth and deeper seemed to do better while drifting.

Searay is right. If you take some sonny's down there you will catch fish any place you ancor up. I go to Monticello a good bit during the summer. I always take sonny's and some kind of cut bait. If you put a few rods out with a piece of pool noodle dipped in sonnys give it a few mins to kinda chum the area up and then it's off to the races. I can honestly say every spot I have ever anchored up I've caught catfish there.
I love fishing monticello. one of my favorite places to catch those muddy buddies. I typically drift myself with cut bait from the coves (bream for days). If you do plan on going let me know. thats only 1 exit and a 25 minute drive from me to the dock :D I LOVE catfishing. If you go near a few of the islands and have SI, you can occasionally catch the cats in holes and use spinners/jigs and such and get lucky too. Mostly the smaller eating size.
Go get you some Butch :) I believe you can catch them there with almost anything you use. A lot of dang fun on a kayak!!
