Bluegill fishing
Well, I tried something different today when I went after spawning bluegills. Trout magnets. I read about them on the bream, panfish thread. The more I read the more interested I became. Finally I could not stand it any longer. I HAD to try them. I went on line and ordered some heads and some bison colored (black over butterscotch) 1" trout magnets. Using 2# test fluorcarbon, 1/64 oz head and a thumb nail size pear float on a 6 1/2 ft UL rod I was in business. I went to a friends pond known for oversized bluegill and redear and wore myself out. 1 cast 1 fish, for over an hour. I finally walked away from the bite to come home and clean fish. I HAD A BLAST, BAD KNEE AND ALL.
Perchjerker 101 - BETTER GET YOU SUM, RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PM me for details. Gotta go clean this mess. CHEERS!

Today is Father's Day and I decided last night that I would get up early before anyone was up. I slipped out with my UL and a box of jigs and headed to one of my ace in the hole bluegill ponds for an hour of perch jerkin. The moon is full and i knew that the gill would be on the beds again. They were. I threw a 1/64 oz roadrunner with a black and green crazy angler 1" grub on 2# test. I kept over a half a dozen 8 1/2 inchers and threw back 10 or so just under 8" in a little over an hour. Perch jerkin with jigs is new to me as I have drowned 1,000's of crickets over the last 25 years. Not having to worry about maintaining a bait supply is kinda nice. Funny thing happened when I arrived at the lake. I walked down to check out a bed before I started fishing and there was an explosion out in the middle of the lake. It was as if someone dropped a concrete block in from 20 feet up. This lake has a few grass carp in it in the 20-30 pound range. I am speculating that it must have been sunning itself when something spooked it. It startled me to say the least.

This weekend is the dark moon phase, the bluegills and redears should be on the beds. Pull out the micro jigs and have attem:fish:popcorn

I finally had time to slip out to my favorite bluegil and redear pond this morning. The kids and grandkids were coming at 11:30 for pulled pork and all the trimmings. I was throwing a 1/64 oz road runner with a black and pearl crazy angler 1" grub on the back. It looked like a tiny shiner. First cast into the bedding area produced an 8 1/4" male bluegill in spawning colors. 2nd cast produced another. 4th cast produced a 9" redear and the 8th cast produced another slightly smaller bluegill. I decided i would leave and get back to the house since it was 10:00 am and I had to go to the store for ice and BBQ sauce. The fish were on the beds protecting the nest and colored up. I will not be able to get back out before this spawn is over. I have yet to miss a spawn by fishing the full moon and dark moon phase in May, June and July.

Dug out my pond 3 years ago after it ran dry from the drought that lasted 3 years previously. Cricket George hooked me up with a supplier of some coppernose bluegill that got stocked in there two years ago.
Hit it with the fly rod last fall and found I had some green sunfish that had been introduced somehow. Since the pond is 2 miles from any creek or other pond, it had to be shore birds or something of that order.
Visited it for the first time this year and found the green sunfish and coppernose population was very healthy, with some greens getting to eating size. 4 came home at 8 oz each.
Now, time to stock some bass.
