I've read some other forums on this but wanted some more opinions. I have a Minn Kota Edge 12v and after running on the highest speed continually for a period of time the positive wire gets VERY hot at the battery and flips the breaker. After a period of time the motor will run again. I've never had this problem at lower speeds only on high. I bought he boat new and assume it came with the right size wiring. Any thoughts??? Additionally, as a cheap alternative to expensive wires you might want to buy some jumper cables from wally world and cut them if needed - my buddy has wired my last two boats, with much success, using these.
If your connectors are only pinched on. Try soldering them to keep any vibration away.
Like said above make sure all connections are tight.
8 or 10 gauge wiring which some manufacturers use can be an issue at times, especially when troller is operating at high thrust for long periods of times.
Sounds like a bad connection at the terminal end. It either has corrosion or some broken strands of wire at the connector. Look at the wire to make sure all of the strands are going into the connector, sometimes part of them are cut off when they are stripping the insulation off.
I would suggest cutting the wire back a little and installing a new connector. I would also solder the connection as Ripin suggested.
Does The Negative wire get hot also? If so the wire is under sized.
Well the drive pin on the trolling motor was broke which was probably causing more resistance for the prop to turn thus maybe causing heat...had to hammer the prop off. Also the connector on the breaker was rusted on the bottom. Orielly Auto guy said the breaker connector serves as the ground and if it's rusted then there mite of not been any ground at all. So I took the prop off, drill brushed all the rust off the breaker, and changed out the positive connector.... ran the motor on high for at least 10 minutes and the wire did not heat up at all. I hope the problem is fixed, you can pretty much find out any answer on CDC and You Tube.
The first trolling motor I had on this boat I fried it. Had all kind of trolling motor problems. Replaced batteries, connectors and plugs. Till I bought this trolling motor I have now. I rewired the boat using new 6 gauge wire and took out the plugs and wired direct using a copper sleeve, heat stink and good electric tape. I am now running a 12/24 trolling motor, I love the power I gave on 24V side.Quote:
