Playing Around Some

Just have been thinking about what to put with this FL Green Estaz and this is just the first, but will do more soon. I also have to admit I have been wanting to put some of this Shrimp Pink marabou on something to see so got both. The Candy Pink head is showing a little more Red that is really is in my hand and think that is just because I have my camera set on vivid.

I like that, Mr. Skip. I haven't tried tying any Roadrunner style heads yet. I also haven't tried my hand at tying with feathers. Maybe in the future?

I do have a question. Once you drop them in the water and they get wet, is there a big difference between hair and feathers? I see a lot of folks tying jigs with feathers and was just wondering if feathers have an advantage over hair.

Well buddy I see it as both have an advantage in their own times. I see it like this, early spring maybe the water temps are still around 50 degrees, I have no doubt as to what hair can do then and especially kip tail or squirrel tail hair and probably Fox as well and maybe even buck tails, but I just have still not got over the buck tails yet as something I want to fish with, LOL! Of course I felt the same way about kip tail until I tried in and I remember that day so well and if you don't mind I will share a little of it. Some boys over in your part of the world ask me if I could make them some jigs like they were using because they couldn't get them any longer. So they sent me some and I actually got a guy to make a mold for the head and he sent me 2 jigs for samples. I painted and tied them, but still not believing in them at all! So I took one and tied it on, went down to my bank and had a cork about 14" above the jig. I just plopped it down maybe 3 feet from me off my bank. After a few minutes I decide to move it and lifted it out, but then I saw a flash under it so I put it right back in. 15 minutes later I had 3 crappie and the smallest was 14" long. I was now a believer, LOL!

Now I told you that to tell you this. For me I believe most of the time after the water warms even a little above that,feathers are better and yes they are so different in the water. Especially marabou, there is nothing just like marabou with it's action in the water is just awesome! Hackle also has it's gift and it also moves better in the water and even sitting still every little water movement with make the feather look like it's breathing. Do yourself a favor and either tie some your self or buy a few from someone of each and use a big glass or a fish tank if you have one and tie each on a piece of string and move them around in the water. Move up and down and just slow forward and other ways you may use one on your line and see what you see!

I should add this.....I feel when it's cold the fish I know don't jet around chasing shad or anything so it makes perfect sense that hair that is somewhat stiff like kip tail would be good because it's not going to move around a lot or wiggle too much so it fits right in to that environment. When the fish are chasing shad when the water is more warm they are full of it running around busting top water and all kinds of things. I see that as feathers being king when water warms up from winter.

Thanks a lot for all of that information. I believe, after reading many of your post that your desire not only to tie better jigs yourself, but you want all of the rest of us to tie better jigs also. I will have to get me some marabou and try to learn to tie me a few jigs with it. Thanks again, Mr. Skip.

Strong color contrasts do seem to be more effective most of the time. Skunk, bumblebee and red head patterns come to mind. Nice jigs!
