I have never found much use for the color black other than to use it to make a line in a bait or to make smoke. There is one shade of black that I do like, maybe just a hair darker than the one in this picture.....

Black is one of my favorite colors especially for bluegills it's also been my favorite for crappie at times it's very deadly. for many years I used black with crank baits for bass black plastic worms has always been deadly along with everything else for warm water game fish it is one color that I deftly have in my tackle box every time I go out. a combination with black with other colors such as purple yellow and so forth and so on are good combinations when you are using black.
I've caught more crappie on black and chartreuse than any other color hands down. It isn't always the best but it always works.

When I 1st started fishing for crappie I never used black. I thought to myself there is no way a fish could see the color black in the muddy waters I fish. Wrong. I believe you fish clearer waters though CTom and I'm clueless if they like black. I've had better luck with black/fluorescent green than black/chartreuse. Going to have to pour some up.
Nip, there are times of the open water season here that a green fluorescent chartreuse does better than the traditional yellow. Generally the water has to be warmer than it is right now though....75 degrees or more. The lake I fish locally can have water anywhere from clear with visibility down to 10-12 feet right down to muddy and visibility of about 4". Got about 4 feet right now. Every once in a great while when the water is muddy black offers itself up as a decent reverse contrast color, one being darker than the water. People fishing plastic at night use black for the same reason. I prefer purples and blues over black.
Black is great when combined with lime chartreuse. That is my all time go to bait color combination.
